Surviving in the modeling industry isn’t easy. It’s not just pretty faces and smiling for a camera. Aside from the physical and emotional toll on your body, there are constantly younger, fresher girls trying to take your place. Models like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum are the exception, not the norm.
With 14 years in the industry, Jessica White is well past the trendy phase and edging her way into household name status. But how did she do it? When we chatted with her, she was candid about how difficult it was to get to the top. She said:
You’re constantly having to reinvent yourself, especially when you’ve been in the business as long as me. Which I’m pretty good at. I’m a gemini, so it’s not hard to change. We’re changing every second of the day. I guess for me it was a sacrifice. I sacrificed my childhood, I sacrificed my youth to be successful, that was another downfall. I’m extremely successful so I don’t have time to really maintain personal relationships even with my family, so there is a huge amount of sacrifice which has been the hardest part for me. Maintaining a sense of normality.
But Jessica was quick to counter her statement by emphasizing that her sacrifice opened up doors for life-changing experiences. At the end of the day, it was all worth it. She says:
It’s afforded me to take care of my family. It has opened up every single door for my production company, me writing a book, I don’t think I would have ever been exposed to any of these things if I hadn’t started modeling when I was 14. It’s made me into a cultured person. I came from humbling beginnings and it transformed my life. I concentrate on what it has done for me versus what you feel you have to sacrifice. Sacrifice is the name of the game, but I love my job.
